Good news! I am proud to say that we have accomplished making our first upcycled item. This was very exciting for us because we were able to use the sewing machine for the first time and learned how it works. My partner and I are very proud of ourselves are trying to find more time to continue working to upcycle more clothing. So far we have decided to work Monday, Wednesday, and Friday each week to accomplish this. I have found a new love for this project and am looking forward to continuing creating more products. I have learned that if I devote more time and passion to this project, there will be astonishing results. We have also started working on a couple shirts and will hopefully have a lot of finished items soon. The setbacks so far have been finding more time to work on the project, but will our commitment we will be able to overcome this. It is essential that me and my partner compromise and have flexibility with our schedules so that we can get good results for this project. The next step is to just create more items and be ready to teach the women at the shelter how to upcycle. I can apply things I have learned to my community by taking what I have learned from upcycling and documenting it so I will be able to teach people as well. This is why along the way I have been and will continue taking picture so you will be able to see the transformation in the clothing.

For our first item we cut out this owl from another shirt and sewed it onto this cute vest.

Reminder: To still please DONATE clothes!!!

  1. I have recently donated my old clothes for your project! I hope that your upcyle item came out amazing! I love clothes and I always wanted to know how to use a sewing machine. How many items are you planning on making? What kind of items are you making? Shirts? Pants?

  2. Hi Abbie! I really love and respect this project. So much time and energy goes in to making any sort of clothing, and to upcycle clothing, I'm sure, requires a huge time commitment. Because you have just made one item, are you worried that the lack of production may affect the end result of your project? If so, how are you planning to increase your productivity in the last couple of weeks?

  3. I really like the idea of this project in that it is so creative! It is great to see how committed you are to this project and that you are also loving what you are doing too. This type of project can inspire and benefit many people in which I hope it does. What is the next item you plan on making?

  4. I think your project is a very creative one. I'll make sure to try and donate clothes the next chance I get! I can't wait to see it upcycled into something new and creative as well! There is an Instagram user who upcycles and sells a lot of her clothing, as well as thrift shop finds (@10dollardressshop). Maybe you could go to other classrooms and maybe around the neighborhood asking for donations as well! About how much time goes into each upcycled piece of clothing and how do you plan on teaching others who do not own a sewing machine?
